The language of the advert perplexed me:
“Do you call the shots, pay the bills and rule the roost”
“Seeking type A women”
“Wear the pants”
All infer a taking of the masculine role by women. To me this is the caricature of the Female Breadwinner. Those that I meet are very much still women in every sense of the word. My fear is that this type of programme could be quite sensationalist, portraying alpha females as power hungry with their disempowered husbands, when the research I have undertaken suggests that women are so much more emotionally intelligent than that.
I encourage women to share their experience to support others, but am not sure that airing your experience on a docuseries is the way to go about it. Opening your life up to scrutiny when perhaps you have not had time to examine it yourself yet could potentially be extremely damaging. In turn, giving ammunition to those who don’t agree with your role as Female Breadwinner.
What do you think? Am I being too cautious, too protective of the women I see as my tribe? Does the language of this advertisement ring true for you? Would you apply?
I would love to hear your thoughts and would welcome the opportunity to work with any TV producers who want to create a considered multi dimensional programme about the diversity of experience for Female Breadwinners and how they make their lives and relationships work.
